The meaning of the icons is as follows:

Sun - categories/forums that are awake or active

Moon - categories/forums that are asleep or inactive (you can wake them up :) )

Blue/hand reaching to the stars - read only information

Red Envelope - Hot topic

Red Envelope with a dot in the centre - Hot topic that you have posted to

Faded Envelopes - as above but not recently active
