Astrology is based on symbolism and the various signs, planets and other points of a birthchart are represented by glyphs. Some planets have more than one glyph, most notably Pluto. There are other glyphs used in astrology for the lesser used points. The asteroids or centaurs have their own as do the various aspects and the minor points such as the Arabian Part of Fortune, Black Moon and even the earth. The earth symbol is sometimes shown opposite the sun in a birthchart, but is primarily used when working with heliocentric (sun centred) charts rather than geocentric (earth centred) charts.

The glyphs used to represent the signs are derived from the constellation and image depicted there. Most are easy enough to recognise from the symbol that represents them in the zodiac. The glyph for Aries shows the ram's horns, Taurus the head of the bull, Gemini the twins and so on.

The glyphs of the planets are made up of basically the same elements. Those elements are the cross, the circle and the semi-circle. Each of these elements represents something of their own. The circle represents eternity, never-ending, the spirit. The dot inside the circle of the sun represents the power or the spirit beginning to show through. The cross represents the material world and the semi-circle represents the soul.
