Although astrology is not based solely upon the sun and the sign that it is posited in at birth, it is nevertheless the most important planet in Western astrology. The sun is often termed in astrologyas one of the luminaries, the other being the moon. Naturally in Western astrology it is the more important of the two.

Not a planet as such, but for astrological purposes it is treated as one.  The common daily "stars" or horoscope columns in newspapers are written from the point of view of placing the sun on the Ascendant and viewing the planets from that perspective. That is astrology at its very basic with the sun in isolation.

The sun describes our basic essence, the inner self, and the core of our being. It is the conscious awareness of the general spirit, identity in its basic form. The sun is the life force, the life within us, the giver of light on the personality. The sun finds its manner of expression by the sign it is placed in. By its sign, it describes how we approach life in general. Because it is the most important planet, being the natural giver of life to all things, it is the main consideration when beginning to understand our birthchart. Other planets and the aspects they make to the sun will of course modify some of the basic traits known for the sun in whatever sign it is placed. Strongly aspected it can be modified beyond recognition of the basic traits characteristic of its sign. Many of the typical traits of the sign will be evident, but perhaps not immediately apparent. These typical traits can manifest in a variety of different ways due to the influences of other planets.

It has also been said that as women get older they take on more of the traits of their moon sign and the sun sign traits become secondary to that.
