The Ascendant otherwise known as the Rising Sign marks the beginning of the chart. The Ascendant forms the cusp of the first house. It represents the way we present ourselves to others and how they see us on first impressions.

Keywords and what the First/1st house governs:

THE NATIVE

The self, identity, appearance, habits, physical characteristics that others see first. Health and well-being, the physical body, vitality, attitude and temperament, the way you look upon the world. The self-image, outer personality, disposition.

Any planet placed within 8 degrees or so of the Ascendant will have a marked influence on the personality and will add colour to the characteristics and all things governed by the house in which it is posited (12th or 1st).

Please also see the Ascendant page.

In Mundane Astrology the house first governs the nation and its people, the image of the nation

In Medical Astrology, by association of the natural order of the signs, the first house governs the head, brain, eyes, face, muscles, pineal gland. The Ascendant in medical astrology is indicative of the general health and constitution.
